Poker is a card game in which players make bets on the value of their cards and hands. The player with the highest five-card hand wins. Players place bets in rounds, with each round having a different set of betting rules. The game is played with a standard 52-card pack plus one joker (the bug).<\/p>\n
In some forms of poker, certain positions require forced bets. These bets contribute to the pot without the dealer ever dealing anyone a card. The player to the left of the dealer has a small blind, and the player two positions to the left has a big blind.<\/p>\n
The dealer then shuffles the cards and offers them to the player to his or her right for a cut. If the player declines a cut, then any other player may cut. The dealer then deals the remaining cards face-up in a circle around the table. These are called the community cards.<\/p>\n
Each player has two personal cards in their hand and five community cards to create a poker hand. Poker hands are valued according to their rank and the type of combination they form. Examples include: One pair (two of the same cards), Straight (a running sequence of cards), Flush (five consecutive cards of the same suit), and High Card.<\/p>\n
To maximize your chances of winning you must be able to read the other players at the table. Learn their tells (eye movements, idiosyncrasies, betting behavior etc). If a player raises often and you call, he or she is probably holding something special.
